A Malta-based sculptor is on a mission to carve out a brand-new international identity for the island, in snow.
For the past three years, Serhat Gür has been representing Malta in international snow sculpting competitions, taking the Maltese flag to some of the world’s most prestigious winter art events. Now, he is planning to officially establish and promote a Malta-based snow sculpting team to further develop and showcase this unique art form under Malta’s name.
And this year’s milestone was a big one.
Serhat and his team travelled to Breckenridge, Colorado, to compete in one of the world’s top snow sculpture competitions, the Breckenridge International Snow Sculpture Championships.
“Snow sculpting is a true passion. Once you start, you can never really stop,” he shared. “Breckenridge is the place where I felt this passion most deeply.”
The team’s sculpture drew inspiration from Sansuna, a legendary giantess believed in Maltese folklore to have built Malta’s 6,000-year-old temples. The powerful figure was brought to life in snow alongside three strong women, symbolising strength, heritage and unity.
Serhat described the experience as especially meaningful, working in perfect harmony with his teammates. This year marked his first time sculpting as a team with Joelle and Marisol, artists he had previously met but never officially collaborated with in competition. He was also joined once again by Ada.
Beyond the carving and competition, the experience was shaped by the people around them. Serhat extended thanks to hosts Michelle and Joy for their constant support throughout the event, as well as to Ryder, who he said brought joy and positive energy to the team.
Now, with momentum building, Serhat is seeking media support to help raise awareness about Malta’s growing presence in the international snow sculpting scene. His goal is clear: to formally establish a Malta snow sculpting team and continue representing the island on a global stage.
From sun-soaked shores to snow-covered sculptures, Malta’s artistic reach knows no limits.
