Brett Pointing has been appointed the new Queensland Police Commissioner following his predecessor Steve Gollschewski’s retirement.

Pointing first joined the force in 1981 and was eventually promoted to deputy commissioner, before leaving to take up a position as deputy commissioner for the Australian Federal Police in 2020.

He was recently on the independent advisory panel for a 100-day review of Queensland Police.

Pointing will now return to Queensland Police on Friday as the new commissioner for the next 12 months.

“I am deeply humbled to have this opportunity. Policing has always been in my blood,” he said.

“I am committed to strengthening community safety, stronger support for the frontline and investing resources where it matters most.

“It is great to be back in the Queensland Police, a place where I have strong personal connections.”

Premier David Crisafulli threw his support behind the new commissioner, saying he will help make the state safer.

”Brett Pointing’s experience will be invaluable in leading Queensland Police and restoring safety where you live,” he said.

The appointment comes just days after former commissioner Gollschewski announced his retirement a little under two years in the role.

After 46 years within the police force and being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer early last year, he said it was time to focus on his health and family.

“Although my determination is stronger than ever, I’ve accepted that having cancer is a lifelong journey, and it is time to put my family and health first,” he said.

“Leading the Queensland Police Service has been the greatest honour and privilege of my professional life, and I am proud of what we have accomplished.”

Gollschewski said he had complete confidence in Pointing, who he described as “one of the most exceptional policing brains in the country”.
