PITTSBURG – Tyrone Wright, Gavyn Elkamil and Jadyn Taylor combined for 58 points to lead the Missouri Southern State University men’s basketball team to an 83-75 road win over Pittsburg State University at John Lance Arena Monday (Feb. 16).
The Lions (14-10, 8-7 MIAA) led for more than 36 minutes of clock time in the contest. MSSU built a 16-point margin, 55-39, with 12:20 to play. The Gorillas (14-11, 8-7 MIAA) battled back to get within four points, 74-70, with 51 seconds remaining but couldn’t overcome the deficit down the stretch.
Connor Rogers led Pitt State with 19 points, while Mason English added 17 points. Ethan Sage chipped in with 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. The Gorillas shot 42.9 percent (32-59) from the field in the game.
Wright and Elkamil finished with 20 points apiece for MSSU, while Taylor added 18 and Isaiah Atwater finished with 14. The Lions shot 55.4 percent (31-56) from the floor and MSSU outscored Pitt State, 15-6, at the free throw line.
The Gorillas, in the midst of a five-game home stand, will play host to the University of Nebraska-Kearney Thursday (Feb. 19) at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
