After a heart-pumping sprint up a mountain on skis, Australian athlete Lara Hamilton has barely a second to catch her breath before she must bolt back down as fast as she can. As she reaches the top of the course, heart rate approaching 200 beats a minute, she has barely a few seconds to prepare her skis for the downhill. There is only one thought running through her head: “Don’t screw this up.”
Sydney-born Hamilton is one of two Australians competing in a sport making its debut at the Winter Olympics Milano Cortina: ski mountaineering – or skimo for short.
