A LOCAL Bathurst politician says Christopher Mies’ high-speed collision with a kangaroo in the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour should be the catalyst for the installation of permanent fauna fencing.
Mies was covered in blood upon emerging from Haupt Racing Team’s Mustang GT3 after making impact at approximately 250km/h down Conrod Straight.
It occurred four months after a Kai Allen Bathurst 1000 near-miss of what would’ve been similar magnitude.
Speaking with the Western Advocate, councillor Warren Aubin stressed that it could be a matter of life or death.
“We’re not just mucking around saying we need to keep the kangaroos off the track,” he said.
“We need to keep drivers from being killed.
“They’re in a pretty hectic business where you can get hurt quite substantially doing what they do, but we don’t want to add to that flavour and put more things out there for that to occur.
“It’s not on. We have to do something and we have to do it now.”
Temporary fencing is currently used.
The next motorsport event at Mount Panorama will be the Bathurst 6 Hour at Easter.
