Short‑throw projectors are a godsend when you don’t have the space to project from across the room. Instead, these clever devices sit close to the wall and beam the image upward, letting you enjoy a full, large‑screen cinematic experience without needing a long throw distance.

Manufacturers like Epson have been working to ensure short throw projectors can deliver you as good a viewing experience as conventional projectors.

Their latest flagship, the ultra-short throw (UST) EH‑LS970B projector, offers 4K viewing up the screen with 8.3 million‑pixels along with 4K1, 3LCD, and 3-chip technology. Epson says this projector delivers up to 3x brighter colours and reliable performance2, Bose3 audio and brings AI‑powered image optimisation to premium home cinema.

“Engineered for film lovers and design‑conscious users alike, the EH‑LS970B combines next‑generation picture performance with an elegant UST form factor that sits just 28 cm from the wall while delivering up to a 150‑inch image,” Epson says in a news release.

There’s a lot of tech to get your head around with the EH‑LS970B. It offers pixel-shifting technology that works in parallel with three individual high-definition LCD chips to produce a very sharp 4K1 (8.3 million pixels) picture while maintaining full brightness.

The projector’s laser optics engine produces 4000 lumens of white light and colour light output, and you get full 10-bit HDR colour processing.

Epson says the EH-LS970B delivers depth and clarity in every scene, with a 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Dark areas look richer and more detailed, while bright highlights stay vivid, creating a cinematic, lifelike image.

The Scene Adaptive Gamma feature enhances depth and tonal balance, letting you view shadow detail while preserving natural highlights. Dynamic Tone Mapping analyses each scene in real time to adjust brightness, contrast and colour for a refined viewing experience.

AI is used to sharpens fine details while the AI perceptual ‘quantiser’ optimises brightness and contrast for natural, lifelike tones.

Epson’s Setting Assistant4 app for mobile devices lets you correct projection distortion for an optimal image fit.

The projector comes with Google Assistant built in. You can control it using your voice.

The EH‑LS970B is now available in Australia and New Zealand, costing AU$6,399 and NZ$7,499 respectively.
