Anti-monarchy group Republic has issued a statement as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is arrested. The disgraced royal, who is celebrating his 66th birthday today, was arrested just after 8am at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, which has been his home since his eviction from Royal Lodge earlier this month.
CEO Graham Smith reported the former duke to Thames Valley Police earlier this month. He has said that the arrest is the “result” of Republic’s action while others have been “unwilling to act”, adding to “make no mistake, this is a result of Republic’s action”.
Mr Smith added: “We reported Andrew to the police when others were unwilling to act. Republic has been instigating a private prosecution when the police were reluctant to investigate. Republic’s lawyers will continue to investigate related alleged offences and provide information to the police over the coming weeks and months.
“There is reason to believe that in relation to some offences other senior royals may be material witnesses. The police must follow all evidence wherever it leads.”
