Noted sports opinion-giver Skip Bayless was fired up on Wednesday about the Team USA hockey win in overtime at the Olympics over Sweden.
Rightfully so. It was quite the game. Except then Bayless went a little off course.
Bayless watched the 3-on-3 overtime format and thought it was awesome.
“You know, 3-on-3 is much more fun to watch,” Bayless wrote on X. “More open ice. More 1-on-1 shots on goal. Less lucky-bounce high-traffic goals in front of net.”
The problem is that that wasn’t the end of Bayless’ post.
He then wrote: “Listening, NHL?”

The community note on X is gold: “The NHL already has 3v3 OT.”
The funniest reply might be this one:
So true Skip!! I’ve been saying something similar about the NBA. If they added a 3 point arc, it could potentially increase scores, shot volume and possessions per team. Listening, NBA?

There’s actually a question here of whether Bayless thinks the NHL should go to 3-on-3 all the time, or whether he doesn’t know the overtime rules.
Either way, it’s not an ideal look for someone who gets paid a lot of money to talk about sports.
I think this is the 3rd high profile sports TV personality who has made such a post. The NHL already has 3-on-3 OT. We’ve got to get the fathers back in the home and make NHL more accessible on TV. https://t.co/YWLTAO3OUN

There might be more 3-on-3 before the Olympics are done. Three of the four quarterfinals went to overtime, and all the way through the gold medal game, the OT format remains 3-on-3. Buckle up.
