Another chapter in the modern rivalry of St Mary’s and Nightcliff is set to be written as the two perennial contenders prepare to face off in what is expected to be another memorable qualifying final.
Every moment of the qualifying final will be streamed live and free from 6.45pm on Friday by The NT News and KommunityTV as part of our season-long NTFL coverage.
WHY TO WATCH
Twice these sides have met this season and the ledger is squared, but the battle for now is to keep their double chance alive and maintain a clear route to this year’s grand final.
Nightcliff suffocated St Mary’s in their first meeting leaving some doubt on the competition’s most successful club’s credentials for this campaign, particularly with spearhead Jackson Calder injured.
But that loss inspired something in the Green Machine and they’ve since gone unbeaten, including defeating the Tigers on their return visit in a fourth quarter surge.
That match was won by some late Jack Landt goals from unlikely angles and a coming-of-age performance for small forward Xavier Vallejo.
Skipper Dylan Landt is the form midfielder in the competition, aided by a potent group including Connor West, Jackson Braunthal and Josh Smithson that will want to take the run to double digits.
Nightcliff, meanwhile, had to fight their way into a double chance position in the final round beating PINT, who have been the big improvers of this season.
The Tigers are a side that usually match well against Saints with a defensive style that can limit the forward pressure their foes like to bring.
Ryan Nyhuis is the general down back while their midfield group led by captain and three-time Nichols Medal winner Brodie Filo is as good as anyone’s.
Mitchell Trewhella is perhaps one of the signings of the season winning the club best and fairest while Riley Baldi and Brandan Parfitt are known dangers going forward.
