Chinese smartphone brand Motorola who are well known for their poor updates of their Android OS and Motorola UI , has just started rolling out Android 16 as Google moves to roll out the latest Android 17.

Motorola has begun rolling out Android 16 to its 2025 Razr and Razr Ultra models — months after competitors moved their flagship devices forward and as Google accelerates development of Android 17.

The update is currently reaching users in the United States, Europe and India, with Australian customers still waiting.

In Australia, the Razr 2025 and Razr Ultra 2025 continue to run Android 15, the version the devices shipped with at launch.

The delayed rollout once again puts Motorola behind rivals in the software update race.

While Google and Samsung have built reputations for delivering faster and longer-term Android support, Motorola has frequently faced criticism for slow major OS upgrades and inconsistent regional release schedules.

The Razr 2025 was released in Australia running Android 15 out of the box, despite Android 16 already being available in the wider Android ecosystem. Now, only months later, the Android 16 rollout marks the device’s first major operating system upgrade — and it arrives at a time when attention has already shifted to Android 17.

Google has reportedly distributed early Android 17 beta builds to developers and reviewers, with a full public release expected around mid-2026. That means Motorola is effectively playing catch-up, delivering what will soon no longer be the latest Android version.

The Android 16 update itself is substantial in size, weighing in at roughly 4GB. Users are advised to download it over Wi-Fi. However, despite the size of the update, expectations should remain modest. The upgrade delivers incremental improvements, refinements and background enhancements rather than sweeping visual changes or major new features.

Among the additions are expanded customization options and improved cross-device integration. One convenience feature allows users to log into Wi-Fi hotspots automatically if both devices are signed into the same Google account.

Motorola’s Hello UI remains layered over the Android experience, continuing the company’s approach of integrating its own services and software ecosystem into its devices.

For consumers paying premium prices for foldable smartphones, timely software support remains a key differentiator. While Motorola’s hardware continues to compete in the foldable space, its update cadence continues to trail market leaders.

Razr 2025 and Razr Ultra 2025 owners can check for the Android 16 update by navigating to:

Settings → System → System Updates

Availability will vary by region and carrier — though for many users, the bigger question may be how long they will have to wait for Android 17 once it officially arrives.
