Indra Brown wasn’t supposed to be here

Indra Brown was already supposed to be out of Italy by now. The fact she wasn’t tells you everything you a lot about her rapid rise.

Simon Smale can tell you the rest:

12m agoSun 22 Feb 2026 at 12:57pmA tearful revelation from gold medallist Eileen Gu(Getty)

Women’s freeski halfpipe gold medallist Eileen Gu was a little late to her post-final press conference, and at the end of her remarks she’s revealed why.

“I just found out that my grandma passed away,” Gu says through tears.

“She was a really big part of my life growing up and someone I looked up to immensely.

“Some people cruise through life, but she was a steamship.”

The Chinese superstar says she knew she was sick and “this was a possibility, saying she went to see her before the Games and didn’t promise to win, but promised to be brave.

“I’m really happy I was able to uphold that and hopefully do her proud. I really apologise for being late.”

Sweden wins women’s curling gold(Getty)

It ultimately comes down to the final stone of the women’s gold medal match and Sweden beats Switzerland 6-5 as Anna Hasselborg takes out the last Swiss rock and secures the final point.

Switzerland was down 5-3 in the ninth end of the women’s gold-medal match against Sweden but Alina Paetz pulls out a two-pointer and we’re off to the 10th (and final?) end all square.

Australia’s final place in the medal tally

Zoe Atkin down in bronze and now Britain cannot medal in the 4-man bobsleigh means Australia just sealed the Ashes at these Winter Olympics, by a single silver. 3 Gold, 6 medals – AND covered Britain, again. Superb. Nervy final day waiting for that!

– John

You’re not wrong, John.

With only Sweden and Switzerland in the women’s curling, and USA and Canada in the men’s ice hockey still hunting medals, we now know where Australia will finish in the medal tally.

Australia is 14th with three golds, two silvers and a bronze.

(AOC)

Great Britain is 15th with a 3-1-1 split.

Remarkably, it’s not Australia’s highest finish on the tally, having finished 13th in Vancouver 2010 despite only winning two golds and a silver.

Switzerland breaks up the German sweep in the bobsleigh(Getty)

Switzerland has spoiled the party for Germany in the four-man, jumping into the medals with its fourth and final run.

Michael Vogt’s last time down in the Cortina Sliding Centre was rapid and the first of the three German teams, piloted by Adam Ammour, could not match it.

They led for much of the run, but slipped just 0.04 of a second behind the Swiss.

Ammour is devastated as the men in red celebrate a bronze medal as the second and third German teams leapfrog them.

Love for Indra Brown

Indra is to be congratulated for being where she is – in the top 11! This is her first go!

– intouch

OMG – SO proud of Indra for an amazing first Olympic performance! She may not be old enough to have a celebratory drink, but she proved tonight that she is among the world’s best. Amazing!

– Dev

Well done Indra! 5th in the world is pretty impressive – and if this counts towards her homework, 5 out of 11 is a pass 🙂

– Mike

Indra did an incredible job and is definitely developing into a superstar!! Congratulations 👏

– Indra fan!

It’s not just Eileen Gu who is impressed by Indra Brown, you folks seem to like her too!

1h agoSun 22 Feb 2026 at 11:43amRosie Fordham sneaks into top 30 in cross-country skiing(Getty)

Australian Rosie Fordham has just crossed the line with an agonised expression on her face after the slow-motion torture chamber that is the 50km cross-country skiing.

Fordham finishes in 30th spot, 22 minutes and 2.4 seconds after Swedish gold medallist Ebba Andersson, who wins her first Olympic gold medal after bronze and silver in 2022 and three silvers at these Games.

Norway’s Heidi Weng (+2:15.3) takes silver and Swiss Nadja Kaelin (+6:41.5) is third.

An unforgettable moment for Indra Brown(Getty)

Australian Indra Brown is thrilled with her performance in the freeski halfpipe final, finishing just 5.5 points out of the medals as a 16-year-old.

And, personally, she landed her first 1080 in competition — one of just two competitors to land the triple spin in the final.

“Just really proud of how I was able to improve each run and put it down there when it counted. Really proud of myself,” Brown tells Channel Nine.

“I’m really stoked to be able to put it [the 1080] down, that was the best run I’ve ever landed in competition. I’m just really proud and stoked.”

After that final run, which pushed her from 10th to fifth, gold medallist and skiing legend Eileen Gu rushed to embrace Brown and made the genuflecting “Hail Queen Indra” gesture as she walked off.

(Getty)

“It was a really special moment to have someone I idolise give me a hug after I land my third run at the Olympics.”

As for her plans for the future:

“Just keep skiing, keep enjoying it and let it take me where it takes me.”

The 2022 winner nabs her third Olympic gold medal, alongside three silvers.

Gu (94.75) leads a Chinese 1-2 with Li Fanghui (93), who looked like she might be leapfrogged after Zoe Atkin’s big final run, but judges only awarded her a 92.50 and she takes bronze.

Here are the final standings, with Aussie teenager Indra Brown finishing a brilliant fifth:

Huge love for Indra Brown from Eileen Gu at the end of her run.

The Australian 16-year-old pulls out a 1080 for the first time in competition and scores an 87!

She’ll finish in fifth spot, jumping up from 10th with that run.

Gu embraces her at the bottom of the pipe, telling her she “did so well” and praises her with a hailing motion as she walks off.

Indra Brown coming up after another Eileen Gu masterclass

My word, Eileen Gu has pulled out another stunning run.

And she improves on her 94.00 from the second run.

It’s a 94.75 just to put an exclamation mark on things.

Meanwhile, in the bobsleigh …

What’s the latest with the four man bobsled?

It’s still looking decidedly German at the top.

Top skiers going ‘a lot bigger’ than Brown(Getty)

Former aerials gold medallist Lydia Lassila is at Livigno and makes a point that the difference at the moment really is the height of the jumps.

She says “it’s very tight at the top” and the likes of Eileen Gu, Li Fanghui and Zoe Atkin are “going a lot bigger” than 16-year-old Australian Indra Brown.

“Indra, you’ve got be proud of her. She’s put down two very clean runs, she just does need that amplitude,” Lassila says.

After a 55.50 in the first run, Brown’s second is 65.00.

Her tricks and landings are on point, but the judges seem to be whacking her for a lack of amplitude on the jumps.

An amazing run sends Eileen Gu into the lead(Getty)

The Chinese superstar, after throwing away her first run after losing momentum on her first landing, has got to be up in the medals after this second run.

Huge air, great execution and smooth as butter on the landings.

SHE’S IN FRONT!

94.00!!

Massive score and good luck touching that.

Indra Brown of Australia is up next.
