Tournament co-hosts India and Sri Lanka both slumped to heavy defeats at the T20 Cricket World Cup on Sunday night. And it featured a dismissal that’s only ever been seen five times before.

South Africa stunned the defending champions India with a 76-run victory in the Super 8 stage, as the co-hosts were dismissed for just 111. Sri Lanka also crashed to a 51-run defeat to England in Pallekele.

During the Sri Lanka-England game, Dushan Hemantha was dismissed hit-wicket after his bat accidentally made contact with the stumps. Hemantha swivelled around to play the ball by Jamie Overton, but lost control of his bat and watched on in agony as he knocked his own bails off.

Remarkably, it was just the sixth instance of a hit-wicket dismissal in the history of men’s T20 World Cups. Even more remarkably, it was the third time it occurred at this World Cup alone.

It left Sri Lanka reeling at 7-69, and they were eventually bowled out for just 95 while chasing 147 to win. Off-spinner Will Jacks took three wickets inside the power play as England recorded their 12th consecutive win in a T20 against Sri Lanka.

Phil Salt had earlier helped England make 146-9 with 62 off 40 balls, and Jacks smashed four boundaries in his 21-run knock in the death overs.

In the other Super 8 game, India were rolled for just 111 after South Africa made 7-187 in their 20 overs. India won the last T20 World Cup and were riding a 12-match winning streak since the 2024 tournament.

But it came crashing to a halt as as left-arm paceman Marco Jansen took 4-22 in 3.5 overs. David Miller had earlier hit 63 off 35 balls, with seven fours and three sixes.

“Great performance. Very different type of wicket to what we’ve had here, so great to see the boys assess that pretty early and adapt their skills to execute their plans,” said South Africa captain Aiden Markram.

“We’re really pumped for the bowling group. They’ve been working hard, started the comp a bit tough, but the way they rocked up tonight was a great effort.”

India captain Suryakumar Yadav said: “We bowled really well, but we could have batted a little better. Sometimes you’ve got to think, if you’re chasing 180-185, you can’t win the game in the power play, but you might lose it. We lost too many wickets in the power play.”
