The ATP Mexican Open in Acapulco kicks off its main draw with seven first-round matches on Monday, February 23. This article features #4 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who will take on Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate, but who will advance?
ATP Acapulco Day 1 Predictions
Adam Walton vs Aleksandar Kovacevic
Head-to-Head: Walton 1-0 Kovacevic
Adam Walton got his first main draw win of the season last week in Delray Beach and gave a tough battle to Tommy Paul in the second round. Walton defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic in the second round of qualifying here last year, and the American would be looking to avenge that loss. Neither player is playing their best tennis right now, but Kovacevic is the higher-ranked player and should be able to get the win.
Prediction: Kovacevic in 3
Miomir Kecmanovic vs Tristan Schoolkate
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Miomir Kecmanovic has shown some good tennis in the last two weeks and would be looking to make a deep run here. He is a strong player who is capable of hitting through his opponents even on these slower courts. Tristan Schoolkate hasn’t won a tour-level match since last year’s US Open and will struggle to get cheap points behind his serve. Kecmanovic is more consistent and in better form to get the win in this match.
Prediction: Kecmanovic in 2
Cameron Norrie vs Rafael Jodar
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Cameron Norrie has made a positive start to his season but would be disappointed to bow out early in Rotterdam. However, he loves playing at the Mexican Open and has had many great results, including the run to the final in 2022. Rafael Jodar has a good serve on hard courts, but the slower conditions here will allow Norrie to get more returns in play. Jodar is improving his baseline game, but he is not at Norrie’s consistency yet.
Prediction: Norrie in 2
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Daniel Altmaier
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Last year’s finalist, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, arrives in good touch and will be looking to make a good start to the week. The Spaniard did not compete last week, meaning he should be well-rested and fresh off the blocks. Daniel Altmaier upset Alexander Zverev here in 2024, but he is playing far from that level right now and has yet to win a match this season. Davidovich Fokina is a big favourite to win this match for me.
Prediction: Davidovich Fokina in 2
