AFL goal posts have been installed at Albany Creek State High School, signalling an exciting new chapter of Australian rules football for the school and broader community.

AFL Queensland, Brisbane Lions Co-Captain and Aspley junior Harris Andrews, Brisbane Lions premiership player Dayne Zorko and Albany Creek State High School staff and students gathered on the school’s oval to celebrate today’s unveiling.

The new goal posts were provided through AFL Queensland’s Goal Post Infrastructure Program and funded by the AFL Queensland Grand Final Facility Fund in partnership with the Queensland Government. Albany Creek State High School also contributed to the project.

With the new goal posts installed, the school is striving towards putting their first team together for the StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup, with the aim of becoming an AFL Queensland School of Excellence in the future.

Head of AFL Queensland and International congratulated Albany Creek State High School on this significant milestone.

“The installation of AFL goal posts is a clear sign to students, staff and the wider community that Albany Creek State High School is here to play,” she said.

“With the appropriate facilities now in place, our AFL staff will assist the school in delivering engaging, inclusive programs and support them in building their first StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup team.

“We believe the installation of the goal posts will only encourage more people in the school and surrounding community to love and connect with Australia’s game.”

AFL Queensland Venue and Government Partnerships Manager Alison Lyons said this project was an example of great collaboration.

“Albany Creek State High School were highly motivated for this project and had goal posts installed within months of submitting an application under our Goal Post Infrastructure Program,” she said.

“The oval will not only be used by Albany Creek State High School, but will be accessible to the surrounding AFL community who may be in need of more greenspace for their competitions and programs.”

Adam Nicholson, Albany Creek State High School Head of Department – HPE/Sport said the school was excited by the benefits the goal posts could bring to the school community.

“Albany Creek State High School is very excited at the opportunities that the new Australian rules football field and partnerships could bring to our school community,” he said.
