Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is getting a facelift.

According to Tom Rothman, who just appeared on Matt Belloni’s podcast The Town, Sony’s universe of Marvel characters, which includes a plethora of well-known Spider-Man villains, will be getting retooled. When asked by Belloni about the future of the franchise, Rothman confirmed that they would go back to the well for a “fresh reboot” with “new people.”

After the release of Kraven the Hunter, which only grossed $62 million at the worldwide box office, the SSU franchise had hit an all-time low, making even less money than Madame Web, which made at least $100 million total after its run. The only success that the Spider-Man-inspired franchise had was the Venom trilogy, grossing more than $1 billion after the last installment in 2024.

Outside of Tom Holland’s trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, Sony has seen success with the Spider-Verse films in animation on the big screen. Miles Morales’ third installment is one of the many animated Spider-Man movies coming up, as spinoffs are also in the works.

One of the biggest criticisms of the SSU was the lack of actual Spider-Man, which is why Sony halted the franchise and has been focusing on bringing other variants to life, but on television. Nicolas Cage, who voiced Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse, is set to play a new take on the hero in his own MGM+/Prime Video series, Spider-Noir, debuting in late May.

It’s highly possible that Spider-Noir, depending on its success, could be something that heavily inspires the direction of the reboot. Whether Cage’s show will be part of that universe could also be determined based on its reception, as he could easily be part of a live-action Spider-Verse if that is where Sony is going.

With the many Spider-Man variants that exist, from Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099, and Scarlet Spider, just to name a few, Sony has the great potential to finally have their own successful Marvel universe, similar to the MCU. It will also come down to who is involved creatively, as the SSU never had its own Kevin Feige.

After Spider-Noir on May 27, Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day will open in theaters on July 31. Sony is also currently developing an animated Venom movie, with Tom Hardy set to be involved in some capacity.

Sony is also working on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is slated to open on June 18, 2027.
