SACRAMENTO, Calif. — On the heels of two spirited contests against ranked opposition over the weekend, the Sacramento State women’s tennis team jumped 18 spots and enters the week ranked No. 50 in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s latest poll released on Tuesday.
The No. 50 national ranking is the program’s highest since the Hornets were ranked No. 49 in the country on Feb. 25 of last year and was the first ranking inside the top 50 for Sacramento State since it stood No. 43 in the nation on Feb. 22, 2012.
After debuting in this season’s national rankings at No. 68 on Feb. 19, the Hornets parlayed a 4-3 victory over then-No. 52 Long Beach State and a strong showing against No. 22 San Diego State into a significant leap.
Of Sacramento State’s matches thus far, the Hornets have faced four teams ranked in this week’s poll: No. 21 Stanford, No. 22 San Diego State, No. 45 Hawai’i, and No. 51 Long Beach State.
Standing at 6-4 overall on the year, Sacramento State opens Big Sky Conference play with two dual matches on the road this weekend, facing Montana on Friday (Feb. 27) at 8:30 a.m. PT, then traveling to Montana State on Sunday (March 1) for a 9 a.m. PT first serve.
