TAG Heuer releases a new Connected Calibre E5 smartwatch model in partnership with Formula 1.
Based on the 45mm Connected E5 model, this special edition is cased in DLC-coated grade 2 titanium and features a dedicated app for keeping up to date on F1 races.
Another fun F1 feature is the bezel, which features markings corresponding to the different parts of an F1 race weekend: free practice, qualifying, and the race itself.
While the focus of TAG Heuer’s recent smattering of Carrera Chronographs gave enthusiasts a great deal to be excited about, the brand’s recently updated Connected models have been no slouches either. With updated operating systems, features, and Carrera-esque case designs in 40mm and 45mm, there was a lot to like if you were considering a smart watch from a luxury brand. With a dedicated golf-oriented model and a collaboration with New Balance, TAG Heuer has catered to demographics that would find such a product useful. That being said, TAG Heuer has always been associated with motorsports, and TAG’s latest Connected model ties in the brand’s Formula 1 sponsorship to create a smartwatch for F1 super-fans.
While most automotive and racing collaborations feature a unique colourway and some co-branding, this new TAG Heuer Connected x Formula 1 model has some unique features that are very appealing to die-hard fans. TAG Heuer has developed a dedicated Formula 1 app for this Connected model, which allows wearers to view the season calendar, race schedules, post-race results, driver and team standings, and progress throughout the race weekend with the different stages marked on the ceramic bezel.
Custom notifications, sounds and graphics have been designed to evoke the excitement of race weekends and mimic pit radio communications, bringing the Grand Prix to your wrist. A custom watch face has also been designed, featuring a track outline that changes with each race. With the time displayed beneath the track, the seconds are indicated with a dot that moves along the track outline. As the season progresses, the track changes, accompanied by the country’s flag and race name for each Grand Prix.
Aside from the dedicated Formula 1 app, all the other features of the TAG Heuer Connected series are there, with a full suite of fitness, sleep, recovery, and heart rate tracking. It also features GPS tracking, iPhone and Android capability with a voice assistant, call capability, and notifications. Offering 3 days of battery life in low-power mode and 30-minute fast charging that provides enough juice for a full day’s use, it remains just as convenient as any other smartwatch.
The TAG Heuer Connected E5 45mm x Formula 1 carries over the same form factor as the other titanium 45mm Connected models. Cased in a brushed and sandblasted grade 2 titanium with black DLC coating, the steel and rubber crown and integrated pushers are also black DLC coated, with the pushers featuring a red lacquer accent. The case measures 14. 8mm thick, and is water resistant to 50 meters. As already mentioned, the ceramic bezel features the various stages of race weekends, with the TAG Heuer logo located at 12 o’clock, and the F1 logo placed at 6 o’clock.
The case back is secured by screws and houses the heart rate and 02 sensors. DLC coated black to match the case with a red outline, the case back displays model information, water resistance, and denotes the Connected E5 x F1 special edition. The watch comes in a special presentation box, with matte surfaces contrasted with a glossy checkered pattern mimicking the finish line flag.
The Connected E5 x F1 also comes with two straps. One is a black leather carbon fibre pattern strap with red stitching and rubber backing. The other is a flexible and stretchy textile strap with a self-fastener closing system, intended for greater comfort when in use for sporting activities and sleep tracking.
Closing thoughts
For those who are die-hard Formula 1 fans, I can see this model being quite appealing. Fans of Red Bull Racing in particular may already have a smattering of TAG Heuer special editions, but this model has appeal beyond TAG Heuer’s team partnership with Red Bull. For those who can’t attend the races or be glued to a screen while the races are happening, this provides a way to keep up to date with the happenings without having to be completely engulfed in a larger screen. Plus, it is still a full-featured smartwatch that serves practical purposes in the off-season.
The TAG Heuer Connected E5 x F1 is certainly not for everyone, but for those that it appeals to, I can see it being a very compelling offering. I also think that this is a great display of a co-branded product done right, as it allows for user engagement across both TAG Heuer’s products and Formula 1. While TAG Heuer’s Connected watches are certainly premium in the smartwatch landscape, this is also a relatively approachable way for someone to participate in the TAG Heuer/Formula 1 partnership. It could be quite cool to see the race tracking app functionality expanded to other races, as I would get a kick out of this being able to track the 24 Hours of Le Mans. (Editor’s note: or the Bathurst 1000!)
