South Sydney‘s injury problems appear to be returning with Brandon Smith having scans on his calf.

On Triple M’s NRL Daily, host Charlie White revealed he’d been texting Smith amid rumours around a calf injury with that news confirmed.

If the severity of the injury is towards the bad end of the scale, Smith could miss the first six to 10 weeks of the NRL season. Leo Thompson recently did his calf and has been ruled out of up to 10 weeks.

Injuries were a major issue for South Sydney last year and it all started when Cameron Murray did his Achilles in pre-season.

Latrell Mitchell, Jamie Humphreys, Peter Mamouzelos, Cody Walker, Campbell Graham, Jayden Sullivan, Tevita Tatola, Keaon Koloamatangi, Mikaele Ravalawa and Davvy Moale were all out with injuries over the year too.

Coach Wayne Bennett admitted in August it was “absolutely” the worst injury list he’d seen.

On NRL Daily, James Graham expressed sympathy for the Rabbitohs and Smith in particular.

“They were cursed by injuries last year … that was the reason they struggled to perform consistently so it’s not ideal,” he said.

“The injury gods do not want to bless them.

“Knowing Brandon and diving into his recent journey and change, it’s going to be a big test for him. It’s come at a far from ideal time but no doubt Brandon will have known life wouldn’t have been a red carpet and he’d get these tests and he’ll have the support around him to get through it.”

During the off-season, Smith revealed he’d spent time in rehabilitation for alcohol and gambling issues.

Smith played South Sydney’s trial against Manly with minimal issues and opened up on how he’d been going down a “dark road” before rehab.

Last year Smith arrived at the Rabbitohs while still recovering from an ACL and MCL injury. He injured his MCL again on debut.
