Known as the “Conquistador,” Castillo competed in the Featherweight division. His four championship fights came against Salvador Sánchez, Alexis Argüello and Julio César Chávez, and Juan Laporte.
Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of the WBC, shared a message over Castillo’s death via social media.
“I’m so deeply saddened by the passing away of Ruben Castillo,” Sulaiman said, per TMZ “What a wonderful man. [He fought] so many greats in the ring, yet he was such an unbelievable friend. Nice, kind, always happy, always funny.”
Castillo ended his professional boxing career with a 67-10 record, including 37 knockouts. He retired and returned to the sport on multiple occasions, as is normal within the boxing world. At 5’8”, Castillo had great speed and technique inside the ring.
Impressively, Castillo began his career on a 43-0 run. His first loss came against  Alexis Arguello during a 1980 bout for the WBC super featherweight title. His career spanned decades, starting in 1975 and finally coming to an end in 1997. His best years came throughout the 80s.
Ruben Castillo Became an Announcer After Retiring From Boxing
Following his retirement from boxing, Castillo moved into announcing work. He worked alongside the legendary Chick Hearn before later moving to call fights for ASPN.
With so much experience inside the ring, Castillo was a beloved part of the fight experience when he was announcing the bouts. His passing will undoubtedly come as a blow to the boxing community, both domestically and on the international stage.
Castillo also chose to dip his toes into the acting world during the late 80s. He appeared in the 1988 movie Fists Of Steel. However, after that, he never appeared back on the big screen. At least, not in terms of acting, anyway.
There are currently no further details regarding Castillo’s passing. Furthermore, no information has been released regarding an impending funeral service. That information will most likely remain private for close friends and family.
