After winning the Greek Cup over the weekend, Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens returned to EuroLeague action but came up short in the Round 29 game on Thursday night. Head coach Ergin Ataman was also ejected late in the game.
Playing without Kendrick Nunn, Panathinaikos fell 104-99 at home to Paris Basketball, marking their third straight EuroLeague loss. Their last win in the competition came on February 3.
The game ended in dramatic fashion. With PAO trailing 101-99 and just seven seconds remaining, Nigel Hayes-Davis (who finished with 27 points) attempted a potential game-winning three-pointer.
He missed the long-range shot, but both he and Ataman argued that there was contact and demanded a shooting foul. The referees made no call, allowing play to continue.
Moments later, Ataman received his second technical foul and was ejected.
The Turkish coach had been visibly frustrated throughout the night. He picked up his first technical foul early in the second quarter.
Ataman also wanted to fill the protest in with three minutes left in the third period.
At that time, he was upset over a call involving TJ Shorts. The referees whistled a defensive foul on the Panathinaikos guard instead of calling an offensive foul on the Paris player, who appeared to make illegal contact.
Earlier in the game, Ataman also slammed his clipboard during a first-half timeout.
