Manchester United could pay as much as £15.9million ($21.4m) in compensation to Ruben Amorim and his assistants following his dismissal as head coach.
Amorim was dismissed following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United on January 5 after a breakdown in relations behind the scenes.
The 41-year-old was replaced by Michael Carrick until the end of the season, and the former United midfielder has since overseen five wins in six Premier League games.
It was reported at the time of Amorim’s exit, including by The Athletic, that United had paid around £10m as a compensation package to the Portuguese and his staff upon their exits from the club.
United’s full second-quarter results suggest that figure could rise further, as “a provision of £15.9m ($21.4m), representing the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments” will be recognised later in the financial year.
United also wrote off £6.3m ($8.4m) in amortised fees paid to Sporting CP, Amorim’s former club, following his appointment in November 2024.
The club’s initial second-quarter results, released on Wednesday, only concerned events up until December 31 and so did not reveal the settlement terms with Amorim and his staff.
United’s full second-quarter report also reveals that they have upgraded their revolving credit facility since the turn of the year, for the second time in the space of seven months.
The revolving facility can be thought of as a bank overdraft that allows United to borrow cash and pay it back as and when necessary.
On February 10, United increased the facility’s borrowing capacity to a maximum of £400m ($539.6m), up from a previous limit of £350m ($472.1m). This followed a previous upsizing of the facility last summer, from a limit of £300m ($404.7m), in order to help United finance their summer transfer spending.
As of February 17, United had borrowed £215m ($290m) on the facility, with capacity to borrow a further £185m ($249.6m).
