We’re just a few days away from a full moon being upon us and the March one has a slightly bizarre name. Aussies will witness the Worm Moon on March 3 and it will depend on the cloud cover that night on whether you’ll get to see it.

We’ve already had the Wolf Moon in January and the Snow Moon in February and now it’s the Worm’s time. Not only that, but this full moon will also be a blood moon, which is a total lunar eclipse.

This is when the Moon orbits through Earth’s shadow cast by the sun.

Some of the full moon names originate from Native Americans, according to Space, and some of them come from European settlers when they brought their own cultures over across the Atlantic.

This month’s moon gets its name from the changing of the seasons.

GLASTONBURY, UNITED KINGDOM - DECEMBER 04: A full moon rises on December 4, 2025 in Glastonbury, England. Tonight's full moon is the last of a trio of supermoons, so called because it is when the moons is closest to the Earth and is also known as the Cold Moon, marking the start of winter as it occurs nearest the winter solstice. In the northern hemisphere, the Worm Moon marks the last full moon of winter and the ice and snow slowly begin to melt around this time.

This period would also see some areas with worm trails on the ground as it thaws from the last few chilly months.

“The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night,” Space meteorologist Joe Rao said.

“The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation.”

It also has other names like the chaste moon and the death moon.

Will Aussies get to see the Worm Moon?

If there’s heavy cloud cover in your city or town, chances are you won’t get to witness the moon.

Here’s the forecast for Aussie capital cities for March 3, according to the Bureau of Meteorology:

Sydney: It’ll be mostly clear from the afternoon into the evening

Brisbane: There will be a shower or two in the afternoon and then be mostly clear in the early evening

Adelaide: While it’ll be cloudy during the day, it’s set to be mostly clear from 3:30pm all the way into the night

Melbourne: A shower or two is forecast for the whole day and night

Darwin: The Top End will have a shower or two or even possible storms

Hobart: Cloudy all day and night

Canberra: A shower or two is set to persist through the day and night

The moon is set to rise into the night’s sky around 7:20pm AEDT and won’t set until just after 7am AEDT on March 4.
