Last month, with little fanfare, the Federal Court appeared to hand Santos an emphatic win. The oil and gas giant had not misled its investors when it spoke about plans to become carbon-neutral. It was a significant ruling, but one that has consequences far beyond Santos and the activists who claim the company’s natural gas can never be green.
The matter, heard by Federal Court judge Brigitte Markovic, was brought by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility, which describes itself as a research and shareholder advocacy organisation, and was the first in the world to legally challenge a company’s carbon neutrality ambitions.
