VERONA, N.Y. — Katrina “Hurricane” Scalzo stepped into the ring for her first professional boxing match in front of a supportive hometown crowd.
Scalzo, an elementary school teacher, faced Michelle Cook of Hogansburg, New York, in a four-round super lightweight fight at the Turning Stone Casino Event Center as part of an eight-card championship boxing night.
Scalzo described the experience as overwhelming and said, “That was so surreal. I felt incredibly blessed and grateful for the support that I have received over the past month and even the past few days. I think it helped make me feel a little more comfortable. It’s a little bit of a bigger stage than what I’m used to, but I felt very comfortable once I got into that ring, and then it was game on.”
The judges were split on the outcome. The first judge scored the fight for Scalzo, the second for Cook and the third judge ruled it a technical draw.
