The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has taken note of the incident that occurred during the Semi-Final match between Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club and Natakali Rugby Club at the Tailevu Rugby 10s Tournament, held at Ratu Cakobau Park on Saturday, 28 February 2026.
The FRU acknowledges that the Tailevu Rugby Union, as the tournament organizer, has addressed the issue directly with the two teams involved. Consequently, those identified as being involved in the brawl will face disciplinary action from the Tailevu Rugby Union. The Fiji Rugby Union fully respects the Tailevu Rugby Union and the integrity of its internal investigation into the matter.
However, as the National Governing Body for the sport, the Fiji Rugby Union deems it necessary to speak out and remind all rugby communities to adhere to the values that define our game. The FRU does not condone such behavior, as it fundamentally contradicts the core principles of our sport—most notably respect and discipline.
Fiji Rugby Union Board Chairman, Mr. John Sanday, emphasized the need for the entire rugby community to uphold these standards.
“While we respect the process being undertaken by the Tailevu Rugby Union, we have a duty to speak out clearly on this issue,” said Mr. Sanday.
“Rugby in Fiji is more than just a sport; it is a guiding pillar of discipline and a powerful force for positive change in the lives of our people. Behavior that undermines these values is not wanted, nor will it be accepted.”
Mr. Sanday confirmed that the FRU will be issuing a formal reminder to all Provincial Unions across the country reinforcing this message.
“We will be reminding all Unions that such conduct has no place in our game. Our safeguarding rules are in place for the safety and well-being of everyone at our match venues—players, officials, and spectators alike. We must work collectively to ensure our venues remain safe, respectful environments that reflect the true spirit of Fijian rugby,” he concluded.
The Fiji Rugby Union urges all stakeholders, from administrators to players and fans, to join in fostering a disciplined and positive rugby environment nationwide.
