KEEP AN EYE ON

The injury bug that haunted the D-backs last year struck again early in spring training, as OF Corbin Carroll broke his hamate bone on a swing in live batting practice. The 25-year-old was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2023 (.868 OPS), regressed as a sophomore (.749 OPS) and then finished sixth in NL MVP voting last year (.883 OPS). The injury cost Carroll his spot on Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, but it remains to be seen how much time he misses in the regular season or how soon he could return to form.
Two veterans are hoping to reignite their careers in the desert. 3B Nolan Arenado, 34, has seen his OPS decline three straight years .666 and was traded out of St. Louis over the winter. 1B Carlos Santana, 39, is coming off a career-worst .633 OPS while hitting just 11 homers in 124 games last year with the Guardians and Cubs.
Last year’s big addition, RHP Corbin Burnes, made just 11 starts (2.66 ERA) before requiring an elbow reconstruction that will keep him out to start this season. In the bullpen, RHP Justin Martinez (Tommy John) and LHP A.J. Puk (internal brace) are also out to start the year.
