Formula One has signed a multi-year extension of its Australian broadcast partnership with Foxtel-owned streaming service Kayo Sports.
Key details:New deal kicks in from 2027 seasonEvery race, qualifying and practice session will be available to both Kayo Sports and Foxtel subscribersCoverage will include unique live feeds, on-demand replays and commentary from Sky SportsThe F1 TV app will continue to be integrated in Foxtel’s set-top boxesNetwork Ten will continue as free-to-air (FTA) broadcast partner for the Australian Grand PrixContext:
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Foxtel will pay around AUS$60 million (US$42 million) a year to keep Formula One on Kayo, a significant increase on its previous agreement, which was reportedly worth AUS$45 million (US$32 million) annually.
Now owned by DAZN, Foxtel has seen off competition from commercial network Nine, whose chief executive Matt Stanton said last year that the company was “definitely” interested in acquiring Formula One rights for Stan Sports. The Age also previously reported that Paramount-owned Ten would ‘likely’ consider bidding for the full package.
Ten has had to settle for the FTA rights to the Australian Grand Prix, which it has shown since 2017 thanks to the Australian government’s anti-siphoning broadcast laws which dictate that domestic events must be available for free.
Foxtel’s extension with Formula One follows the most-watched season ever on Kayo, which saw users stream 898 million minutes over the course of the 2025 campaign, an increase of 26 per cent year-on-year.
It also comes after Foxtel retained the domestic rights to Australia’s Supercars Championship in a deal reportedly worth AUS$50 million (US$32.6 million) per season for the next four years. The broadcaster’s motorsport portfolio also includes MotoGP, Nascar and the World Superbike Championship.
Comment:
Patrick Delany, chief executive of Foxtel Group, said: “Kayo Sports is Australia’s sport leader with the best live sport, and our extension with Formula One further cements our position as the premier destination for both local and international motorsport.
“This extension continues our commitment to growing F1 in Australia and strengthening our fans’ connection to it. We are partners in growth, and for more than a decade we’ve proudly supported the sport’s momentum, bringing fans closer to the action every season. That shared ambition continues to deliver results, with engagement reaching new heights and the 2025 season becoming our most-watched season ever.”
