Mike Florio and Chris Simms discussed the Washington Commanders and their roster holes on Tuesday.
The two shared in a segment of their Pro Football Talk, Tuesday, discussing the Commanders’ needs as they enter free agency next week. When Florio asked about the Commanders’ needs in free agency, Simms replied, “Washington, there’s not many places you can look at, they don’t need.”

“We don’t expect Deebo Samuel to be back with the football team,” began Simms. “So, it’s Terry McLaurin and Luke McCaffrey, that’s all they got going there (receiver),” said Simms. “
Simms offered that he thought the offensive line was an issue for the Commanders (but offered no explanation, choosing to move on to his next concern). “But the bigger thing is they got to get younger on their front seven. I mean, their front seven is old. They pieced it together with old veterans. I don’t think most people would be able to name a player on the front seven of the Washington Commanders.
“They might know Bobby Wagner because he’s been a household name. That’s not a guy you want to be the household name of your defense. Daron Payne is there, but he’s getting up there in years and he’s clearly their best player on their defense. So I look at their front seven to be really one of the biggest things the Washington Commanders got to address.”

Florio said he agreed with Simms on both counts and that the Commanders could use some help along the offensive line as well. He then alluded to the hole at center with the release of Tyler Biadasz. “They have a lot of needs,” exclaimed Florio. “This team has the franchise quarterback, and beyond that, what do they really have?”
Discussing running back, Florio added, “Jacory Croskey-Merrit was the best they had at running back, but he’s not superstar potential. They may want to get in the mix for one of these guys available, like Kenneth Walker. Receiver? The only way Deebo Samuel comes back is if no one wants him.”
Simms commented on the Commanders giving more money to Terry McLaurin, but his being injured last season, then asked, “Are we starting the downfall? They got some big-time work (to do),” Simms explained.
Shifting to the draft, Simms offered the Commanders could get a good player for their front seven, “But it is more than just one or two players the Commanders need.”

“Everything but quarterback, would that be fair to say?” asked Florio. Simms replied, stating they are set at tackle with Laremy Tunsil and “the kid they drafted out of Oregon last year.” Simms then said that is why he joked ‘best player available’, meaning whoever they get could help fill needs for the Commanders. He then mentioned corner and linebacker as examples of where they could use a fairly good player.
He felt the Commanders older players were now all past their prime, “and now we have to retool the football team again…the team looks like it’s in one of the more poor positions we can find in football right now.”
“There’s a chance 2024 was the aberration and not 2025, we’ll find out,” added Florio. “It’s an important year for Dan Quinn, it’s an important year for Adam Peters. Josh Harris (owner) is not going to have unlimited patience. I know he doesn’t want to be like Daniel Snyder. Who does? But there’s a point where you can’t let this continue.”
