This week’s update features points scored in stage races Giro di Sardegna and one-day races Omloop Nieuwsblad, Kuurne – Brussel – Kuurne, Faun-Ardèche Classic, Faun Drome Classic, Visit South Aegean GP and Region on Dodecanese GP.
You can check the previous UCI Rankings update here. The Opening Weekend is always one of the most special moments of the cycling season, and this year was no exception. However, it didn’t cause substantial changes in the team rankings.
The top 10 remains almost the same, with UAE Team Emirates – XRG on top and around 500 additional points compared to the last week. It has been an unusual week for the Emirati squad, in the sense that they did not get any victory.
Their main highlight was Florian Vermeersch’s performance at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The Belgian rider was one of the only two riders that could follow Mathieu van der Poel‘s wheel almost until the end of the race, finishing in third place and earning 260 points. Meanwhile, Jan Christen held on to a solid second place at the Faun-Arèche Classic, giving his team 170 points.
XDS Astana Team stays in second, even if they did not have their most profitable week poits-wise. Christian Scaroni did the Faun double but was far from the victory in both occassions, with seventh as his best result. Mike Teunissen on the other hand sprinted to fifth at Kuurne – Brussel – Kuurne, obtaining 100 points.
Jayco AlUla barely got any points the past week, but they stay in third nonetheless, even if just 43 points ahead of Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe. The German team had Tim van Dijke as the unexpected star, as he was only beaten by Van der Poel at Omloop and secured 320 points for the squad. Jordi Meeus had solid results during the Opening Weekend as well, with two top-10 in a row that granted him 160 points.
In the rest of the top 10, the most notbale rise is that of Team Visma | Lease a Bike. The Dutch team was fifteenth one week ago, but they have managed to go all the way up to seventh thanks to oustanding performances of several of its stars. On the one hand, British talent Matthew Brennan decimated the competition with a powerful sprint at Kuurne that nobody could match, not even Jasper Philipsen, giving 250 points to the team. The day before, Christophe Laporte won the sprint group to secure a fourth place at Omloop and 220 points. In France, Matteo Jorgenson made his season debut at Faun-Ardèche and Faun-Drome proving he is already in great shape. He was fourth and second respectively, losing the final sprint against Romain Grégoire in Faun-Drome.
Jorgenson is expected to be Visma’s leader at Strade Bianche
