It’s now an incredible 95 years since Geelong radio station K rock 95.5 – or 3GL as it was known back then – started calling Aussie Rules footy, one of the first Australian radio stations to do so.
95? Not too dissimilar to K rock’s call sign.
“Maybe it’s a little bit of an omen for the Cats that they can deliver another premiership cup down the highway,” says Head of K rock Football Tom ‘Kingy’ King.
Ahead of tonight’s AFL opening round clash between the Cats and the Suns, Kingy says it’s always an exciting time, both for the K rock team and the Geelong population as a whole.
“We follow the fortunes of the Cats with our heart on our sleeves.”
Even more so, coming off a Grand Final loss.
“Hope springs eternal that maybe the Cats can go one better in 2026,” Kingy muses. “So, as we have done since 1932, we unashamedly want the Cats to do well.”
“If they’re still playing in late September, it’s not only good for the football club, it’s good for the radio station and it’s even better for the City of Geelong and the region as a whole.”

Kingy and Ben Casanelia will continue to lead K rock’s play-by-play coverage in 2026. Former Geelong star Zach Tuohy will be back in the expert’s chair along with Mark Neeld, with Jason Doherty in charge of the boundary duties.
It’s a line-up not dissimilar to last year.
“To use a cliché, stability is our friend in 2026!” says Kingy, adding that K rock has also reaffirmed its commitment to local footy.
“Our partnership with AFL Barwon will continue in 2026, extending that into a sixth season. This year we introduce a new concept called ‘Best of Barwon,’ and that will see us calling the best games out of either the Geelong League of the Bellarine League throughout season 2026, culminating in broadcasting both leagues’ Grand Finals for the first time on K rock 95.5.”
