A driver was heading down a road in Australia when they noticed something huge stuck in a wire fence. They immediately pulled over and discovered it was a kangaroo in a harrowing predicament.
The driver immediately contacted Possumwood Wildlife, and cofounder Prof. Steve Garlick drove out to the scene as quickly as he could. He was shocked when he got there and couldn’t believe that the kangaroo, later named Lake, had been spotted at all.

“He was very difficult to see from the road and could only be seen coming from one direction,” Possumwood wrote on Facebook.
Poor Lake was understandably frightened, so the rescue was not an easy one. It appeared he had been stuck for quite some time and had almost given up hope. Eventually, Garlick was able to free the trapped kangaroo and transfer him to the rescue for treatment.

Lake was dehydrated and had a hip dislocation as well as a few other injuries. Once he was settled at the rescue and learned to trust his caretakers, he was finally able to fully relax. He also bonded with his roommate, Tristan, another kangaroo who had been trapped in a fence, which helped with his healing process.

When Lake first arrived at the rescue, his prognosis was unclear. He has since surpassed all expectations and is doing exceptionally well.
“He is now out in the enclosures and thinks he is very smart,” Possumwood wrote. “He can jump the inside fence, which is quite high, eat some grass and then jump back into the enclosure.”

Lake will be released back into the wild soon, and everyone at the rescue is so thrilled to see how far he’s come.
“We are very proud of this big boy,” Possumwood wrote.
