Consider Wayne Bennett as someone without too much sympathy for Zac Lomax.

The legendary coach believes Lomax has made his bed and the NRL shouldn’t “bend the rules” for individual players after the former Eels star’s bid to resume his rugby league career with the Storm was thwarted last week.

Lomax has broken his last two contracts, including his most recent one with the Eels. Parramatta then requested any team that wants Lomax to send a player back of equal value but the Storm were unable to meet the Eels’ needs in order to sign the talented outside back.

It means Lomax’s NRL career is in limbo given a clause in his Eels exit which states he can’t sign with another team until 2028 unless Parra give their blessing.

Bennett agrees with the Eels’ hard line stance and says if Lomax is lost to rugby league to play for another code, the NRL will be just fine.

“I’m not going to bend rules and make rules for individual players,” Bennett told AAP.

“The game has withstood so much pressure over a long period of time. I’ve been here that long, I’ve seen the best players the game’s ever seen play.

“They’ve all moved on and we’ve still got a great game. The minute we think we can’t be successful without a certain player, we’re in a lot of trouble.

“We want to see good players (in the NRL) and he’s one of those but he’s made a choice. He has to live with it.”

Lomax has reportedly met with rugby union in recent days with his agent Steve Gillis revealing that nothing is off the table.

However, a potential move to Souths can be ruled out.

“No,” Bennett responded when asked if he’s interested in signing Lomax.

Bennett’s Rabbitohs open up their season on Sunday afternoon in Brisbane against his former club, the Dolphins.
