NBA icon Stephen Curry believes that the Golden State Warriors will add a major name this offseason to make the team true contenders for an NBA Championship. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and Milwaukee Bucks MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo are both rumored names that Curry would love to welcome to the roster.
NBA insider Marc Spears shared the following, via the Willard and Dibs radio show:
“I think he knows whether it’s a Giannis, whether it’s a LeBron James, there’s going to be somebody next summer that’s going to join him, join Jimmy, join Draymond, assuming he’s still there.
Remember, this is the Warriors, they got a brand, they can quick fix and add some talent. But on the cheaper side, is the younger guys and if you get them that good experience like they’re getting now, then it’s going to help the franchise in the long run and save them some money for somebody bigger in the process.”
Curry still has faith in Golden State’s front office to make a big splash and add another major superstar. Front offices around the league expect LeBron to leave the Lakers and for Giannis to finally get traded in the offseason as two major options.
Curry Wants Warriors To Get Playoff Experience
Another interesting point raised by Spears focused on the goals for this season. Curry has been out of action since late January, and it remains unknown when he will return to the court. Spears confirmed that Curry does anticipate returning and wants to play important playoff games.
“He wants to play this season. He wants to play in the postseason. Does he have championship aspirations? I think he’s realistic about that. He mentioned to me that Jimmy Butler is not going to be there, but he obviously must like Podziemski, Gui, some of the other young guys on the team, Moody, if it’s important for him to get them playoff time.”
Curry’s teammates have less experience than most past Warriors squads. Spears named Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, and Moses Moody as three younger talents that Curry wants to see get more experience from this postseason to prepare for next season.
Curry Wants One More Championship Run
Golden State has become synonymous with greatness thanks to Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green all leading a new era in 2010s. Kevin Durant and other noteworthy names joining the Warriors extended their window for four NBA Championships.
However, Curry believes he can have a chance at one more title if the roster is improved. One interesting note is that Spears said Curry expects to add a star with Green and Butler still on the roster. Most expect at least one of those two names to be moved to make up salary space for a new talent.
Antetokounmpo would certainly require one of the two getting traded in a deal with the Bucks. James must opt to take a smaller contract since rumors indicate LeBron would be content giving up money to have a chance to contend in a final season. Regardless, General Manager Mike Dunleavy has a lot of pressure to improve the roster with Curry’s high expectations.
