(Getty)
We haven’t seen a lot of defence out there, with the Dolphins looking exactly like the team that topped the point-scoring in 2025 but still finished outside the finals.
The Rabbitohs, meanwhile, are loving being just about fully fit, with Campbell Graham getting a double and Cameron Murray dominating the middle of the field, while Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell orchestrate out wide.
11m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:55amALEX JOHNSTON IS IN
He’s now just one off the record as he latches onto the end of another left-side shift to dive over in the wet.
That’s his 211th career try.
We’ve been told to brace for a pitch invasion, but will it happen on 212 or when he breaks the record with his 213th?

The defence breaks down and the Rabbitohs are in again
Back-to-back charges from Cam Murray and David Fifita leave the Dolphins scrambling and dummy half Peter Mamouzelos splits the markers and jumps through the line.
He gets into the back field and this time Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow can’t shut it down as Mamouzelos finds Jye Gray charging up the middle.
21m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:45amCampbell Graham gets the try AND an assist!
The Rabbitohs’ last-tackle play looks like it’s about to fall apart as Cody Walker is caught with the ball, but he manages to get an offload away and Ashton Ward pops a kick across the field.
Campbell Graham flies and takes it unchallenged, passing down to the ground, where Morgan Knowles looks like he’s cleaned up for the Dolphins.
But the ball immediately comes loose and straight back to Graham, who regathers and dives in for his second of the day.
29m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:37amPure power from the Dolphins to crash over
Herbie Farnworth and Connelly Lemuelu get the Dolphins on the front flipper and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki charges onto Isaiya Kato’s short ball to dive over right next to the posts.
Isaako’s conversion has them trailing 12-10 with 13 minutes left in the half.
31m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:34am22′ The bunker takes another one off the Rabbitohs but they add two points
The bomb goes up and Latrell Mitchell gets through to contest the ball.
It ricochets forward off Mitchell as he leaps through the air, he regathers and grounds it. Peter Gough calls it a try, assuming it came off his head, but Mitchell knows it’s not a try.
And the bunker agrees.
But we’ll come back for a penalty because Englishman Morgan Knowles inexplicably took out Cameron Murray on the chase.
Latrell soothes his pain from missing out on the try with a penalty goal.
39m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:27am20′ Cody Walker with a solo stunner down the short side, but the bunker takes it off him
The Rabbitohs five-eighth skips down the short side on the last and, with no support from his runners, he grubbers for himself and regathers to score.
It’s awarded on the field but the bunker steps in.
Two camera angles appear to show his foot dragging across the sideline after a tackle by Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and the try is struck off.
But a corner post camera certainly makes it look like his foot may have been in the air as it passed over the line.
(Supplied: Kayo)43m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:23amLatrell Mitchell is over
The Rabbitohs go left and Cameron Murray beats a rushing Tom Gilbert with some strength and fleet feet.
That creates the overlap as the ball continues to the dangerous left flank and Latrell Mitchell powers over the tryline.
I thought Latrell might set up Alex Johnston there for try number 211, but he made the right play as Jamayne Isaako shut down the pass.
And he hooks the curling conversion through the sticks for a 10-4 lead.

15′ Hammer wins a one-on-two
Jye Gray bursts through the middle and has Campbell Graham on his outside. He finds him, but Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is quick enough to mark both players and eventually bring Graham down.
The Rabbitohs are still on the attack though.
50m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:16amIntercept! And the Dolphins go the distance
The Rabbitohs spin it to their dangerous left edge and Jake Averillo perfectly reads Cody Walker’s attempted pass to Latrell Mitchell, pinching it and going 90 metres to score.
Jamayne Isaako, just as Mitchell did, hits the upright with his conversion and the scores remain tied after 11 minutes.

9′ AJ in open space!
But it’s a false alarm.
Jake Averillo is collared by Latrell Mitchell and leaves the ball behind. Alex Johnston swoops and sees some clean air in front of him from 40 metres out, but the ball pops out as he’s tracked down.
57m agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:08amAnd the Rabbitohs go up the other end to score far too easily
On the back of the penalty, David Fifita takes another great charge and the Rabbitohs spin it right.
Campbell Graham catches it in open spaces on the right and sets sail for the tryline.
Tom Flegler and Herbie Farnworth close in from inside but Graham has enough pace and strength to get the ball down out wide.

2′ Early rust from Tom Flegler
Isaiya Katoa carves through the line, but the whistle is blown as referee Peter Gough finds an obstruction.
Tom Flegler got his line and timing wrong and took out David Fifita.
1h agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 5:06am1′ Dolphins kick off the round one finale
Tevita Tatola takes the first hit-up.
And David Fifita gets his first run as a Rabbit on the third tackle.
Latrell Mitchell launches it long to end the first set. He’s lining up at centre with Jye Gray in number one.

Tom Flegler is back for his first game in almost two years
(Getty)
For the first time in 701 days, Tom Flegler will play a regular season NRL game.
The Brisbane, Queensland and Australia prop played just four games for the Dolphins in 2024 before sitting out 23 months with a debilitating shoulder issue.
After making it through a couple of preseason outings, he’s back on the field for the first time in an NRL game since April 6, 2024.

We’re on try record watch
(Getty)
So, Alex Johnston try record watch resumes for 2026.
After falling just short of breaking Ken Irvine’s all-time premiership try-scoring record last year, Souths winger Johnston is back for another crack.
He starts the season on 210, just two behind Irvine’s 212.
Will we see the record tied or broken this afternoon?
1h agoSun 8 Mar 2026 at 4:33amNRL back at Lang Park as Broncos decry fan fight
(X: Jacob01Aus)
Footage of Penrith and Brisbane fans fighting in the concourse at Lang Park on Friday night has elicited a response from the Broncos.
“The Brisbane Broncos are aware of an incident involving a small number of spectators at the conclusion of last night’s match at Suncorp Stadium.
“The behaviour shown in footage circulating online is disappointing and does not reflect the values of the Broncos or the overwhelming majority of fans who support the game in the right spirit.
“Rugby league is a game for families and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. Those involved risk significant sanctions, including long-term bans from attending NRL matches.”
The footage has of course done the rounds on social media and the club responded today, saying “stadium management and Queensland Police are responsible for stadium security and dealt with the incident at the time”.
The club’s statement said the team was “supporting any appropriate action taken” as authorities investigate further.
I assume that means helping to identify potential club members, but it is a fascinatingly general statement.
