Paul Gallen has got one over long-time rival Cameron Smith, bringing up Brisbane‘s dire round one loss against the Panthers in hilarious fashion.

Smith joined the Broncos coaching staff in the off-season, working with the club’s spine and young players in a part-time role under Michael Maguire.

However, the side’s first two games of the season haven’t exactly gone to plan, losing the World Club Challenge against Hull KR before being smacked 26-0 by Penrith.

Speaking on Nine’s 100% Footy on Monday night, Smith admitted the standards from the Broncos weren’t up to scratch and it would need to be rectified quickly.

“It’s really about addressing what went wrong for them on Friday night,” he said.

“I don’t think they handled the expectation of the occasion, fronting up in front of their home crowd for the first time since winning the premiership.

“When it got a little bit hard, they were guilty of overplaying their hand and trying to solve the issues individually.

“You don’t want to build your season around performances like that … they need to go away, individually look at their own game and the fundamentals of the game where they let themselves down and they were that poor with their skills and execution.”

It was at that moment that Gallen – the former NSW Blues skipper who went toe-to-toe with Smith for many years – interjected with a cheeky comment relating to Melbourne’s 23-straight victories in the opening round of the season.

“I forgot you were up there Smithy,” the Sharks legend said.

“That means technically, that’s the first round one loss in your career. Are you OK?”

Smith then responded by saying “you can’t win them all” before Phil Gould delivered a comment of his own about the Storm’s incredible record.

“It was obviously all Craig Bellamy, not Cameron Smith,” he said.

Smith was part of a large majority of the Storm’s winning streak during his time at the club, which saw him win three premierships in 2012, 2017 and 2020.

Bellamy and Melbourne won their latest round one with a 52-4 shellacking of the Eels.
