Western Australia has unveiled former Test spinner Beau Casson as the state’s new cricket coach in Sheffield Shield and the one-day cup after Adam Voges stepped down after eight years. Voges will continue as Perth Scorchers coach, but will end his time with Western Australia at the end of the domestic season.

On Wednesday, WA announced Casson as the new coach of the Shield and one-day cup sides. The 43-year-old Casson, who played one Test during his playing days, has served as Voges’ assistant for the past seven years for both WA and the Scorchers.

Before that he spent five seasons as an assistant coach for both NSW and the Sydney Thunder in the BBL. He’s got big shoes to fill after Voges led WA to three Shield titles and four one-day cup crowns during his time in charge of the Aussie cricket powerhouse.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with Adam Voges and the remainder of the coaching staff over the past seven seasons and have been proud of what we have been able to achieve in that time,” Casson said in a statement. “Adam did a wonderful job to create an environment that brought the best out of all our players, which is something I’m looking forward to building on.

“I want our players to strive for excellence and give them the best opportunity to push for higher honours. I am confident we have the playing group that can bring WA more success in both formats of the game.”

As for Voges, he’ll join the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket as the T20 franchise’s new head coach. He’s coming off a sixth BBL title with the Scorchers, and many believe he’s the next coach of the Australia team if Andrew McDonald ever departs.

His departure from WA serves as a changing of the guard on multiple levels, with Mitch Marsh retiring from first-class cricket as well. The Australia T20 captain will continue playing white-ball cricket, but his red-ball career will finish at the end of the domestic season.

“I’m incredibly thankful to have had the opportunity to be in the role over the past eight seasons,” Voges said when announcing his departure from WA. “We have enjoyed an incredible amount of success over the past four seasons, which is a credit to everyone involved in the side.”
