Two drastically different cultural worlds are coming together to create a profoundly meaningful collection. Global sports and lifestyle brand New Era has officially joined forces with SASHIKO GALS — a dedicated community of artisans based in Otsuchi, Japan — to unveil a brand-new lineup of limited-edition MLB caps. Blending the globally recognized aesthetic of American baseball headwear with centuries-old Japanese hand-stitching, the upcoming project is equal parts fashion statement and historical tribute.

For this collaboration, SASHIKO GALS applied their expertise to three of the most iconic silhouettes in sports history: the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres caps. Each hat is elevated using sashiko, a traditional hand-stitching technique that originated in rural Japan over 400 years ago. Originally developed as a practical method to reinforce and repair garments so they could be worn for generations, the distinctive white-on-indigo stitching is now heavily celebrated in modern fashion, art, and design. Because the artisans meticulously hand-stitch every single piece, no two caps are exactly alike, ensuring that each buyer receives a completely unique wearable piece of art.

Beyond the striking aesthetic, the collaboration carries a deeply powerful message. SASHIKO GALS officially launched in 2024, but its roots trace back to the Otsuchi Sashiko Project, which was established as a post-disaster recovery effort following the devastating 2011 tsunami. Releasing in 2026, this New Era capsule purposely marks 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.

For the artisans in Iwate Prefecture, this project is a testament to resilience. It represents a firm commitment to showing the world what lies beyond mere recovery. By pushing their traditional craft into contemporary lifestyle spaces alongside massive global brands like New Era, the community is successfully building new cultural connections that honor their past while securing their future.

The collaboration between New Era and SASHIKO GALS is slated to arrive on New Era starting on March 18.
