ST. JOHN’S, N.Y. – The Villanova men’s tennis team battled in a tough matchup on Thursday, March 12, but ultimately fell to Creighton, 6-1, at St. John’s.

Villanova opened the match with a strong showing at the top doubles position. Cooper Gordon and Ethan Carr earned a 6-4 victory over Creighton’s McKenzie and McMahon at the No. 1 spot.

Creighton responded on the other two courts to claim the doubles point. The Bluejays took a 6-0 decision at No. 2 doubles, and secured the point with a closely contested 7-5 win at the No. 3 position over Jack Sherner and Quincy Jones.

Creighton carried its momentum into singles play, winning five of the six matches to secure the team victory.

At the top spot, Creighton’s Daisima defeated Cooper Gordon 6-0, 6-2. The Bluejays also picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions, where Will Monahan fell 6-3, 6-3 and Thomas Wakefield was defeated 6-3, 6-1.

Villanova saw a pair of tightly contested matches further down the lineup. At No. 3 singles, Ethan Carr forced a deciding tiebreak after taking the second set 7-5 before falling 10-6 in the match tiebreak. At the No. 6 position, Jack Sherner battled back to win the second set in a tiebreak but ultimately dropped a 10-6 match tiebreak in the third.

Creighton also earned a straight-set win at No. 5 singles to close out the match.

Up Next: Villanova will stay on the road to take on Loyola Maryland, in Baltimore Maryland on Saturday, March 14, at 12 p.m.
