English musician Morrissey has cancelled his planned show in Valencia, Spain, at the last minute, issuing an extraordinary spray in the process.
The 66-year-old, the former frontman of band The Smiths, said excessive noise had left him “in a catatonic state” and made his performance at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia “impossible”.
“Tonight’s scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation,” the statement began.

“Morrissey drove from Milan to Valencia but has been unable to rest in Valencia due to noise.
“The show is not cancelled. Circumstances render the show impossible.”
Another statement told fans he “travelled for two days by road” after playing in the Italian city on Monday, arriving into Valencia on Wednesday, ahead of Thursday’s scheduled show.
“Any form of sleep or rest throughout the night was impossible due to festival noise / loud techno singing / megaphone announcements,” the statement said.

“This experience has left Morrissey in a catatonic state.”
In a follow-up statement, the singer named and shamed further.
“Morrissey has described his hotel on Plaza Manises as … ‘indescribable hell. It will take me one year to recover. And that is an understatement’,” he said.
This is the sixth show of his current tour that Morrissey has cancelled.
Previous cancellations include St Petersburg, Florida, San Diego, St Louis and Atlanta – with fans being given a range of reasons from “artist illness” to “adverse reaction to a prescription medication”.

Morrissey’s next performances – and final shows of his tour – are scheduled in the Spanish cities Zaragoza and Seville on March 14 and 16, respectively.
There’s no word yet on whether those shows will go ahead.
The European leg of his tour had been running since mid-February and included shows in Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, UK, France, Switzerland and Italy.
Earlier this month, Morrissey released his 14th studio album Make-Up Is A Lie, which is his first release in six years.
