A teenage boy has died and several others have been injured after an allegedly stolen car crashed in Melbourne’s south-west.

Victoria Police said a stolen grey Skoda was allegedly pursuing another vehicle in what police said appeared to be an attempted carjacking on Derrimut Road at Hoppers Crossing around midnight.

The Skoda crashed and rolled several times after colliding with other vehicles.

A 15-year-old boy who was thrown from the vehicle died at the scene and a 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl suffered non-life threatening injuries.

They were taken to hospital under police guard.

The girl, who police said suffered two broken legs in the crash, has since been released from hospital and is expected to be interviewed later today.

A 14-year-old boy who later presented at hospital in the company of his family has been taken into custody.

Investigators believed as many as five people were in the car and have urged other occupants to come forward.

The occupants of other vehicles struck by the Skoda were not hurt.

A sword was also found outside the vehicle at the crash scene.

Crash followed high-speed chase

Police believed the Skoda was pursuing a Toyota at speeds of up to 180kph with the intention of carrying out a carjacking when the accident occurred.

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy from the Major Collision Investigation Unit said the people in the Toyota were approached by the occupants of the Skoda at a shopping centre.

“The occupants of the Toyota phoned Triple Zero in fear and were given advice to attend the nearest police station, which was at Werribee,” he said.

Detective Inspector McEvoy said the Skoda made deliberate contact with the Toyota before the driver of the Skoda lost control and crashed.

“This is a shocking circumstance that could have resulted in multiple fatalities,” he said.

“We could have had multiple youths, kids killed, including members of the public who are going about their everyday lives and have now been significantly impacted by trauma.

“This is not a Playstation game where you can hit reset and start again. This is real lives, real situations that cannot be undone.”

CCTV from a nearby business showed sparks flying off a vehicle as it drove erratically along Derrimut Road.

Victoria Police said the Skoda had been stolen from a property in Maidstone between March 11 and 12.
