It is a matter of when and not if at this point, with Johnston adding another try to his tally (211) last week against the Dolphins and he would consider himself a strong chance of adding at least one more if not the two required to pass Irvine (212) against the Roosters.

Daly Cherry-Evans and the Roosters’ right edge defence looked incredibly shaky in Round 1 against the Warriors, and while the return of Queensland centre Robert Toia will certainly help it will still be a tough task coming up against South Sydney’s lethal left edge.
Of course, the other question outside of whether Johnston actually passes the record on Friday in the first place is whether fans will mimic the incredible scenes at the Sydney Cricket Ground after Lance Franklin kicked his 1000th goal in 2022.
The NRL has a clear stance on the matter, reminding fans they will face a $5,500 fine as well as a year-long ban if they storm the field, while both Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett and skipper Cameron Murray have been firm in supporting the league’s message.

“It’s an incredible moment for AJ, but I think it goes against the spirit of the game a bit by running onto the field before the full-time siren,” Murray said on Tuesday.
“As much as I can empathise with the fans wanting to run on and celebrate, I think it goes against the spirit of the game and it’s not really us.
“I think it would cause a few more disruptions during the game than we’d like to deal with, particularly if we have to stop for a fair amount of time.
“We’ll be celebrating if it happens, but not like that.”
