Local livestock producers will sleep easier at night after the NSW government announced Australia’s first home grown vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

It is fast to produce and will see Australia become one of the few nations with the capacity to produce its own vaccine.

The vaccine has been in development for 18 months and is set for further testing before approval from the federal government to use against a possible incursion into Australia.

The country hasn’t experienced an FMD outbreak since 1872, but local cattle farmer Roger Hertel . . .
