In 1956, Australians turned on their televisions and enjoyed the first time where they could hear their own accents, experiences and identities on screen. While Aussie TV has been little more than an experiment before then, the launch of the program “This is Television” on TCN-9 with Bruce Gyngell marked the beginning of regular, commercial programming. “Good evening, and welcome to television” Gyngell told crowds, unaware of the wealth of programs that would explode across the nation in the decades to come. As we chronicle the best shows that have graced our screens since, from the days of the free-to-air four-channels to the streaming landscape sending our creativity into the world, these are the shows that revealed, defined and entertained Aussies for the past 70 years.
