Hollyoaks has confirmed the show futures of popular characters Dillon Ray and Lucas Hay, as dramatic prison break scenes take an unexpected and emotional twist. Lucas has faced a major threat while behind bars, with evil copper Sully revealed to be his new cellmate last week.

Sully told Froggy that he will kill Lucas in prison, unless Donny retracts his statement that he raped him. Froggy was adamant that Donny wouldn’t be doing this, so instead teamed up with Dillon, James and Rex to break Lucas out of prison.

The plan was for Dillon, and baby James, to run away with Lucas following the escape. In today’s episode, Dillon began making preparations to leave, and while Vicky caught him in the act, she was eventually supportive of his exit plans.

Meanwhile, with Rex left in the car, Froggy and James headed to the prison to tell Lucas about the plan. Lucas was only convinced when James lied and said that Ste knew about this and had forgiven him for everything.

Outside, Lucas reunited with Dillon and the pair prepared to leave to go to Bermuda, then Canada. But Rex couldn’t stand by and let Lucas believe a lie, so told him that Ste doesn’t have a clue about this prison break.

As a result, Lucas decided not to go with Dillon, insisting that he needs to make amends and serve his sentence in prison. He said his goodbyes to his beloved ex partner with a final kiss, remarking that they may find their way back to each other in the future.

Back in the village, Dillon felt that he still needed a fresh start, so decided to go to Canada with baby James anyway. He said emotional goodbyes to his family, and left to begin a new life with his son.

Digital Spy can confirm that these were Nathaniel Dass’s final scenes as Dillon, while Oscar Curtis will remain on the show as Lucas – though his character is still in prison for now, and the actor has been on an extended holiday recently.

Lucas will be safe behind bars though, as Froggy paid Sully a visit in prison, giving his son a blade and getting him sent to segregation. He also assured Sully that his fellow inmates will know his identity as a rapist and a bent police officer on his return, so he won’t be able to hurt anyone else.

When will we see Lucas again, and what does the future hold for him?

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
