Anderson Silva received an offer to take part in the MMA Netflix card with another reported offer for a separate combat sport as well. But the latest endeavours of ‘The Spider’ outside of fighting got in the way of that transpiring. On May 16th, Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano will take part in an inter-generational superfight on Netflix with an ample supporting cast featuring the likes of Francis Ngannou, Nate Diaz, and Mike Perry.
With Silva last boxing on a Most Valuable Promotions show that broadcast on the ubiquitous streaming service and being one of the biggest names in MMA history, it would make sense to ask him about these developments. During an appearance recently on The Ariel Helwani Show, with an excerpt posted to the X account of the show’s titular figure, the tenured media member asked the former UFC middleweight champion about the MVP MMA endeavour, as Silva said,
“Nakisa [Bidarian] invited me to come to fight MMA or kickboxing, but because I’m in this process now [becoming a police officer], to study, to keep my mind work on the one thing, I just say, ‘Oh, I can’t this time.’ But when I finish the whole thing, probably I have one or two more fights, only boxing. I’m not have a mind anymore to train in MMA—it’s just too hard for me to back to train MMA. Of course, I train jiu jitsu everyday. I train in boxing two days a week. But [sigh] MMA, no, not anymore.”
Anderson Silva KOed the first-ever Canadian UFC champ in Pride OTD in MMA history
Speaking to one memorable chapter within several enthralling passages that comprise the iconic story of Anderson Silva, he authored a triumphant win on this day in MMA history in the Pride FC ring. Carlos Newton is the referenced combatant here and was felled by Silva just before the 6:30 mark within Pride FC’s customary ten-minute opening round.
Silva garnered the win with a highlight reel flying knee and follow-up punches at Pride 25: Body Blow over against the ex-UFC welterweight titleholder on March 16th, 2003.
