The owners of PSG, AC Milan, are expected to bid for NBA Europe teams in Paris and Milan, respectively. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund (PIF), which controls Newcastle United, emerged as a potential owner for a new London team.
By March 31, all interested investors must submit binding bids to secure the opportunity to host a franchise in the European league that will be created in partnership with the NBA and FIBA.
Among the interested parties are certainly the owners of Paris Saint-Germain (controlled by the Qatari investment fund) and AC Milan (controlled by the American fund Redbird), who are ready to make an offer to join NBA Europe.
But according to The Athletic, the owners of another football team are also reportedly ready to join the NBA Europe project.
Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, which controls Newcastle United, is reportedly ready to make an offer to create a new team in London.
The Saudi business leaders are reportedly ready to build a new state-of-the-art arena in the British capital.
The owners of Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan are also reportedly ready to build new arenas in Paris and Milan in order to meet the NBA’s requirements, which call for high standards in the facilities where games are to be played.Â
The NBA is also active on the domestic front, with discussions underway to expand to 32 teams by adding new franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle.
Current owners hope that the European project will at least partially offset the losses they will have to absorb to add two new NBA franchises. The final vote on the expansion is expected to take place on March 25.
