A late shot on goal which missed to the left-hand side handed the Lions their first loss in two weeks falling, 11.13 (79) to 12.11 (83).
Sporting one of their youngest teams of the season, the Lions were led by ruck Oscar McInerney, who laid claim to best on ground honours booting a goal to go with his whopping 13 clearances, 23 disposals and 26 hitouts.
McInerney booted the Lions first of the contest and Youi Brisbane Lions Academy product Tristen Meekin nailed their second to close out the first quarter as Casey piled on five majors to hold a 20-point quarter time lead.
A six-goal to two second term saw the Lions roar back into the match with majors from Brandon Ryan, Fergus McFadyen, Ty Gallop, Darcy Craven, Jake Fazldeen and Curtis McCarthy.
Dashing half-back Luke Beecken provided plenty of spark finishing with 25 touches, 13 marks and three tackles in one his best performances of the season.
He was well supported by Shadeau Brain who was enormous in the second half and finished with 17 possessions and six marks.
McFadyen’s second the only major for the Lions in the third term as the game descended into an arm wrestle as the conditions started to take their toll on the players, on a wet morning in Springfield.
With score level going into the last quarter, the Lions rued missed early chances to hit front as Casey nailed their first opportunity in front of goal.
McFadyen’s third and Gallop’s second helped steady the Lions who regained the lead on the scoreboard and ascendency around the ground.
Casey booted their second for the term to bring the margin to four points, another Demons major at the 32 minutes mark was the go-ahead goal as both sides went back to the middle with three minutes remaining on the clock.
A holding ball free kick on the final siren gave the Lions a chance to steal the win but McCarthy’s set shot was squeezed wide, falling short of their third successive come-from-behind victory.
The Lions now regroup and prepare for their final home and away game as their travel to Frankston to take on the Dolphins next Sunday at Kinetic Stadium.
