Q36.5 has a huge range of long sleeve base layers fine-tuned for different conditions, in addition to yet more short sleeved options. They’re numbered from 0 to 5 plus an unnumbered ‘bullet proof’ option, with the Base Layer reviewed here the lightest weight long sleeve on offer in a range that includes a hooded option rated by Q36.5 for temperatures between -5°C and +5°C.

They form part of Q36.5’s range of clothing that it claims helps to maintain the optimal body temperature of 36.5°C. The Q stands for research in Latin, with Q36.5 claiming that all its clothing is tested for thermal comfort in a climate chamber.

Q36.5 Base Layer 3 base layer features

Chris Teagles

The Q36.5 Base Layer 3 has a ‘body temperature stability guarantee’ of 8°C, which the brand says is the lowest temperature at which it is designed to provide comfort. That sets the base layer out as suitable for milder UK conditions, but potentially extends its period of use from early autumn to late spring, although a warmer base layer may be needed for deep winter rides.

The weave in the body and sleeves is seamless, with just one seam over the top of the shoulders. There’s a differential weave, with a more opaque front punctuated by hexagonal mesh areas. At the back and sides, there are large mesh sections and there is a ribbed collar and deep ribbed bottom hem.

The fabric is a mix of 44% polyamide and 44% polypropylene with 12% elastane and the airy build leads to a low overall weight of 102g.

Q36.5 makes just three sizes, with each claimed to span two body sizes due to the fabric’s stretch.

Wearing the Q36.5 Base Layer 3 base layer

Taking the Q36.5 Base Layer 3 out of its box, it looks tiny, as if it’s designed to fit an eight year-old. Despite this, it did fit thanks to the high elastane content, although very close to the body. It doesn’t feel constrictive though.

Nevertheless, although the sleeve length is adequate, the body is quite short, albeit long enough to overlap with winter tights.

Chris Teagles

The mesh content and high wicking fabric construction help to keep you comfortable on damp, cool UK winter rides and there’s little tendency to develop damp patches from sweat. With the relatively light and airy weave, choosing a suitable jacket is important if temperatures drop below the mid-single digits, or the Base Layer 3 can start to feel chilly.

The base layer is reasonably resistant to odour, despite the all-synthetic yarns used.

Q36.5 Base Layer 3 base layer review verdict

The Q36.5 Base Layer 3 is a decent option for milder off-season riding, offering effective wicking and a close fit, along with more airflow at the back to help keep you comfortable and reduce sweatiness.

For deeper winter conditions, it may be a little too light, although this does extend its usefulness into the shoulder seasons for UK riders. It’s one of the more expensive base layers available though.
