Set photos from Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist have revealed a first look at Scarlett Johansson’s new role.
New set photos from The Exorcist, written and directed by Mike Flanagan, have unveiled information about Scarlett Johansson’s character in the film, laying the groundwork for the new rendition of the classic horror movie. Flanagan’s The Exoricst movie is set to be a standalone installment in the franchise, with Johansson as one of its lead actors.
Now, a cache of photos on Getty Images has revealed more about Johansson’s character in Flanagan’s The Exorcist. The photos show Johansson being filmed outside a building, walking down a flight of stairs. Shots show she’s filming scenes with co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rahul Kohli, and Sasha Calle, including one where the four of them are walking together.
It appears Johansson and Calle are playing detectives, based on badges they have in various photos. Kohli also has a role on the police force based on his police vest, though it’s unclear what that is. As for Ejiofor, his involvement with them remains unknown, as there’s nothing on his persons to suggest he’s law enforcement.

While the images don’t reveal much about the story at hand, they do reveal a few potentially important scenes. This includes a conversation between Johansson and Ejiofor on their own, as well as Calle’s character seemingly throwing herself against something unseen. Based on these images, this movie in The Exorcist franchise appears to be going in its own direction.
Flanagan’s entry in the franchise is a direct result of the disastrous The Exorcist: Believer, a legacy sequel directed by David Gordon Green that was reviled by critics and audiences alike. Despite making a profit at the box office, it was scrapped in favor of a standalone installment created by Flanagan, which will have its own unconnected story.
Based on the images provided, it seems like this version of the story will be taking a law enforcement approach. Since Johansson is the lead, it’s inevitable she’ll be wrapped into a case of possession, although there’s no information as to how she’ll become involved. Yet it appears supernatural events will, inevitably, drag all four actors’ characters into the fray.
These new images of The Exorcist don’t reveal much about the movie. However, they set a baseline for what to expect, with the film taking on a very different approach in contrast to the 1973 original. With the movie having begun production in mid-March, it’ll be some time before more information gets revealed.
The Exorcist arrives in theaters on March 12, 2027.
