Haas’ switch to the Rabbitohs on a three-year deal in 2027 is set to free up $1 million in the Broncos’ salary cap and Carrigan sees it as an opportunity to get a deserved upgrade.
The 28-year-old is contracted until the end of the 2028 season but he has the ability to seek an upgrade from the Broncos.
The Courier Mail’s Pete Badel revealed on NRL 360 on Wednesday that Carrigan could become the club’s next $1 million player from next season alongside join Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam.
“He’s off contract at the end of 2028 but the interesting thing is Payne Haas is going to Souths at the end of the year, leaving a massive void (in the salary cap),” Badel said on NRL 360.

“Carrigan is on about $825,000 I’m told. I would argue that’s slightly unders for a guy of his ability. I believe he’s almost a $1 million player at some clubs.
“His management will talk to the Broncos in the coming months about a pay rise. He’s happy at the Broncos but he wants a top up.
“He’s the captain in waiting too so you almost have to factor that in. You’d assume he’s a $1 million player or close enough to.”
The move comes after Carrigan put the Broncos on notice when asked whether he would entertain a move to the PNG Chiefs when they enter the competition.
“You never rule it out … It’s a business. You learn how this game goes,” Carrigan said.
Bulldogs legend Braith Anasta said it was deliberate tactic to mention the NRL’s incoming 18th side.
“At the end of the day it is a business and he put it out there. You’ve got to leverage.” Anasta said,[.

“Off the back of Payne Haas, he knows they can’t afford to lose him,” Michael Carayannis added.
“They need to upgrade him, get it done and it takes that pressure off with Payne Haas leaving.”
Carrigan has scored four tries in 132 games for the Broncos since his debut in 2019, including two Grand Finals and a premiership in 2025, while he has played 12 Origins for Queensland and 14 Tests for the Australia to date.
